Iran urges US to withdraw warships

A senior Iranian commander has called on the United States to withdraw its warships and fighter jets from the Islamic states in the Middle East.

"The US should remove its warships, missiles, and fighter jets from Islamic countries before they are seized as spoils [of war]," Commander of Iran's Basij Force Brigadier General Mohammad-Reza Naqdi said on Monday.

The Iranian commander was referring to pro-democracy protests in Bahrain, which is a key US ally in the Middle East and home to Washington's Fifth Fleet.

The US insists that the Fifth Fleet must remain in the Persian Gulf state despite the popular uprising in the country, which seeks to topple the pro-US government in Manama.

There are currently over 31 warships docked in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, nineteen of which belong to the United States, including the nuclear-powered super carrier the USS Abraham Lincoln.

"Today, the bullying of arrogant powers, nuclear bombs, battleships, and fighter jets are ineffective," the commander said.

Naqdi made the remarks after forces loyal to Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi bombarded pro-democracy protesters in several cities, killing and injuring many civilians.

"No power can dominate nations if they are united and the uprisings in the Islamic nations and the Middle East, such as Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya all confirm this fact," the general noted.

Massive protests spread throughout the region after Tunisians ended the 23-year rule of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and Egyptians ousted President Hosni Mubarak after three decades.
